Sydney ngày 12 tháng 1 năm 2010 – Liên Hiệp Truyền Thông Công Giáo Việt Nam phản đối trước cộng đồng thế giới và nghiêm khắc lên án việc nhà cầm quyền cộng sản Việt Nam tấn công một nhà báo Công Giáo tại Hà Nội.

Vào lúc 5giờ 30 chiều ngày 11/01/2010, ký giả Nguyễn Hữu Vinh được LM Nguyễn Văn Liên, Phó xứ Đồng Chiêm, chở bằng xe gắn máy đi thăm làng Đồng Chiêm là nơi vào ngày 6 tháng 1 năm 2010 đã diễn ra việc Thánh Giá trên Núi Thờ bị các lực lượng vũ trang chính quyền Việt Nam triệt hạ và đập phá.

Đến cách nhà thờ Đồng Chiêm khoảng 500m, nơi có tụ điểm công an trấn giữ, gặp đống đất đá đổ ngang đường, ký giả Vinh buộc phải xuống xe. Trong khi cha Liên dắt xe qua đống đất đá thì ông Vinh đứng chụp hình đống đá được công an đổ ra giữa đường nhằm ngăn trở khách từ xa đi xe tới Đồng Chiêm. Lập tức có khoảng hơn 10 người từ tụ điểm công an chạy ra đánh ký giả Vinh và cướp máy ảnh của ông. LM Liên cho biết đấy là những người mang quân phục công an và cả những người mang thường phục. Họ đánh ông Vinh khoảng 5 phút và đã cướp đi chiếc máy ảnh của ông.

Thấy ông Vinh bị tấn công, cha Liên lao vào cứu giúp ông Vinh. Lập tức cha cũng bị công an dùng dùi cui đe doạ và khống chế, không cho cha cứu giúp. Khi những kẻ đánh người bỏ đi, cha Liêm đưa ông Vinh về Dòng Mến Thánh Giá Đồng Chiêm, nhờ các nữ tu cấp cứu.

Các nữ tu Đồng Chiêm đã chăm sóc vết thương ông Vinh, và cho biết ông bị đánh u đầu và gãy một răng cửa. Hiện nay ông đã được đưa về Hà Nội để được bác sĩ khám nghiệm và điều trị vết thương.

Trước hành động công an hành hung ký giả Nguyễn Hữu Vinh, Liên Hiệp Truyền Thông Công Giáo Việt Nam tuyên cáo các điểm sau đây:

1. Cực lực phản đối nhân viên công lực CSVN hành hung ký giả.
2. Yêu cầu nhà cầm quyền mở cuộc điều tra để trừng trị kẻ phạm pháp và bồi thường cho nạn nhân.
3. Tố cáo trước công luận quốc tế về hành động phi pháp của nhân viên công lực nhà nước VN đã vi phạm quyền hành nghề của ký giả.
4. Bày tỏ quan ngại mỗi lúc mỗi gia tăng của chúng tôi là tình hình tại Đồng Chiêm bắt đầu vượt quá vòng kiểm soát khi nhà cầm quyền địa phương tái áp dụng chiến lược bạo lực họ đã sử dụng trước đây bao gồm việc thuê mướn các nhóm côn đồ tấn công người Công Giáo, trong khi các phương tiện truyền thông bôi nhọ hình ảnh người Công Giáo, xuyên tạc sự thật, nói xấu các tôn giáo và kích động hận thù giữa người có đạo và người không có đạo. Nhà cầm quyền Việt Nam phải dừng ngay việc bách hại các linh mục và anh chị em giáo dân, tái lập trật tự tại những nơi thờ tự và ngăn cấm bạo lực nhắm vào những người tham dự các buổi lễ.
5. Yêu cầu nhà cầm quyền Việt Nam tôn trọng chính pháp luật mà họ đã công bố và trả lại ngay tài sản chính đáng của Giáo Hội Công Giáo Việt Nam và các tôn giáo khác.

Sydney, Jan 12, 2010- The Federation of Vietnamese Catholic Mass Media is urgently reporting to the world community about a brutal act of violence committed by the police against a Catholic writer and reporter in Vietnam

At 5:30 PM on Monday Jan. 11, Mr. JB Nguyen Huu Vinh, a Catholic freelance journalist was accompanying Fr. Nguyen Van Lien, assistant priest of Dong Chiem Parish, on their trip to the site of an early morning police attack on Jan 6, 2010 which left dozen parishioners wounded before dynamites were used to blow up a 5 meter crucifix erected on the hilltop of the parish cemetery dubbed “Mount of worship”.

According to Fr. Lien, when they were about 500 meters to their destination of Dong Chiem, My Duc District of Hanoi, the pair ran into a huge dirt pile on the bridge of Ai Nang, freshly dumped by the police to block access to Dong Chiem. As the priest was trying to get his motorbike around this road bock, a group of about 10 uniformed and plainclothes police suddenly approached and assaulted Mr. Vinh savagely until he became unconscious.

Seeing his companion being attacked, Fr. Lien abandoned his bike and rushed to Mr. Vinh’s rescue, only to get him being overpowered and manhandled by police forces.

The perpetrators then left with the victim’s camera, leaving him with a bloody mouth and a concussion on the side of the road. Only then Fr.Lien could call for help and the Sisters of the order of Lovers of the Holy Cross in Dong Chiem quickly came to their rescue, in time to save Mr. Vinh’s life. He is still being cared for by medical doctors and his family in Hanoi.

In light of the violence against Mr. JB Nguyen Huu Vinh, The Federation, therefore, would like to:

1. Strongly denounce Vietnamese police brutality against a journalist.

2. Demand Vietnam government to start an investigation on this incident in order for the perpetrators to be brought to justice, and the victim properly compensated for the bodily and emotional trauma he has sustained as a result of this senseless act.

3. Expose to the world community an illegal and immoral crime committed by Vietnamese law enforcement against the right to perform duty of a reporter.

4. Express our growing concern that the situation in Dong Chiem has started spinning out of control as the local government is reapplying the violent strategy of using hired thugs, and delinquent juveniles to attack Catholics while state media keep spreading negative image of Catholic, distorting the truth, defaming religion, and promoting hatred between Catholics and non-Catholics. Vietnam government must stop persecuting the Catholic priests and the faithful, and restore law and order in worshiping areas to prevent violence aimed at participants.

5. Demand local authorities in Vietnam to respect the law they promulgated and return the properties which rightfully belonged to the Catholic Church and other religious groups.

Vietnam: In Dong Chiem Catholics beaten, a journalist wounded and a priest threatened

Attacked by uniformed and plainclothes police, who took his camera, the reporter was abandoned unconscious and bleeding in the street. Solidarity of the bishops of North Vietnam for Father Van Lien, accused by authorities of inducing”the faithful to commit crimes.”

Hanoi – Catholics beaten, a journalist attacked and injured, a priest threatened and under attack. This is the provisional toll from tensions in Dong Chiem, 70 kilometers south of Hanoi, in the aftermath of the destruction of the crucifix in the parish cemetery by the local authorities and their intervention to quell violent protests against the sacrilegious act. An act condemned by the bishops of the northern part of Vietnam.

“If he had not had a helmet, he would be dead” said the nurse who is treating JB Nguyen Huu Vinh, a Catholic journalist who was attacked and beaten by dozens of agents and pro-government thugs. The attack occurred yesterday. At 5.30 pm Father Nguyen Van Lien, of the parish of Dong Chiem, together with the journalist was making a motorcycle ride around the village. “I trying to get around a big pile of dirt placed on the bridge of the Nang – says the priest – placed there to prevent access to the area, when a group of uniformed and plainclothes police attacked us.” “Seeing that the journalist had a camera around his neck, a dozen policemen jumped on him, trying to snatch it. I left the bike and rushed to his defence, but the agents used sticks to threaten me and make me turn back. Then, once they had the camera, they ran away, leaving the victim in the street, unconscious and with his face bloodied”.

A nun of the order of the Lovers of the Holy Cross in Dong Chiem came to their rescue. Along the way they met a bicycle with two disabled Catholic war veterans. They wanted to go to Dong Chiem. They had encountered the same group of policemen and were also attacked.

The attack on the priest and other Catholics led to a protest march of thousands of Catholics on the streets of Dong Hoi. The protesters also demanded the release of five people, among the poorest parishioners Dong Chiem, held since January 7. That day, the five had been summoned to the service canter of the government to “fill forms for food aid”. At end of day, loudspeakers announced that the five “had bowed their heads, pleading guilty” to having built the bamboo cross, situated in the place where the great crucifix was destroyed with explosives, the day before by the authorities.

The cross signifies the right to property of a site that has “belonged to the parish for more than one hundred years and which we do not want to give up”.

The situation Dong Chiem seems to be moving in the same direction as that of Thai Ha, Tam Toa and Vinh Long. Gangs of thugs (in photo) and state media attack Catholics beat and defame them, threaten their jobs, encourage contempt for religion and hatred between believers and nonbelievers. On 9 January, the president of the district, Le Cong Sang, signed a statement accusing Father Joseph Nguyen Van Huu of “not to meeting his duties as pastor and instead of encouraging his followers to commit crimes,” of ” supporting anti-government activities “,” undermining the large bloc of national unity “and” conducting propaganda against the government of the people. ”

Sang has also ordered the priest to remove the bamboo cross and to report in person to the People’s Committee of My Duc district. Father Van Huu has posted an announcement on the walls of the parish to make known the latest developments to the faithful to make sure that they are not alone: masses and prayer vigils in support of them are being celebrated throughout the country and even abroad, the United States, England, Ireland, Japan.

Support for the priest and his faithful has been expressed by several bishops of Vietnam. Bishop Joseph Nguyen Van Yen, of Phat Diem, went in person, despite the risk of being attacked by the usual thugs.

From Australia, the Federation of Catholic media has reported police violence against the journalist, as well as towards others, and asked the Vietnamese government to carry out an inquiry into the case so as to avoid further violations of justice and ensure that victims are compensated for material and moral damage. In a statement they have expressed “growing concern” about what is happening in Dong Chiem and ask the government to restore respect for the law and prevent violence against those who take part in activities of prayer.
